Hi Jodi,
I'm looking forward to reading your book as soon as it is released.
In Your "Ten Things To Know About Pitching To American Inventor", #4 said..."You must be willing to give up two months of your life...and be cut off from the world..NO CELL PHONES and NO COMPUTERS." Could you please explain that?

Hi. This is Pat Rock, a friend of Jodi's. I was in the top 24 of last year's show. I just spoke to her yesterday and we were talking about InventorSpot. In case she doesn't check in today, I will respond to your question. What Jodi means about no cell phone, etc.... is that the top 12 was not allowed to speak freely to family and freinds so nobody would find out the show's outcome before it aired. Each fo the finalist were able to call home, but only under the supervision of a producer. Cell phones were taken away and there was no use of a p.c. for email. They all ate together and stayed in the same complex. This is pretty standard stuff with reality shows so nothing is spoiled before viewers watch. Even when I was in the top 24, our cell phones were not able to be used. I hope this helps. It is quite a sacrifice being away from your family and friends, but I think they all would say it was worth it.

So, at what point in the process are you isolated? Does it begin once you are called to LA to film? Or if you are chosen to continue after that point? How long is the actual filming process for the show?
Also, if you are an inventor team, do all members stay during the isolation period or do they only allow one spokesperson?

When the top 350 finalists were called to L.A., we all signed a 5 million dollar confidentiality agreement before pitching to the judges. After those of us got our yes votes from the judges, we were told not to say anything to anybody. When the top 50 came back to L.A. we pretty much were able to use our cell phones to call home and let our loved ones know how we did. The top 50 were in L.A. for 5 days. During that time, it was widdled down to 12. The top 12 stayed in Hollywood for another 6-7 weeks only to come home once with a camera crew and to say goodbye to their families and work on background stories. So, you are not fully isolated until the top 12 because everything was taped up until the top 4 were picked. Jodi was back home in Wisconsin before America ever knew she was even in the top 12. As far as your invention team goes, only people you pick for your team can stay with you the whole time. My wife actually assisted me in Chicago while my business partner stayed home. He came to the L.A. rounds and after the first round, ABC told me that my wife would than have to stay home because she was not listed as an inventor. When it gets down to the end, Fremantle and ABC want to make sure that they are covered and only have people there that are truly the right representatives of the product.

5 rocks, thank you so much!!! n that is exactly the type of information we have been trying to find out for the past year and it will help us to make a few decisions.
If you don't mind, I have a few more questions....
After the initial auditions, they film re-enactments of the auditions. Are those filmed in LA?
If you are invited to come to LA for filming, is the cost of the flight covered by ABC/Freemantle? And if you stay in LA for further filming is there any kind of compensation?

Oh, did they wait until the last minute last year to post the actual audition venues? Kinda makes it hard to get a hotel if you need one.

On the first trip to Hollywood, we all stayed at the Sheraton right after the American Idol contestants went home before Hollywood week. The only compensation is your daily per diem.

Wow, thanks for all the info. I am going stir-crazy waiting for the venues to be announced. You're right, it does make it hard to make travel plans.
