When do you lose the rights to your invention?

If your invention proceeds far enough do you lose rights of ownership? I read somewhere that you get royalties and then I read somewhere else that you dont because of paragraphs 27, 28 and 29. Then theres AI finalist from last year still selling there products. I would like to trust them and not get a provisional patent because I think my idea is good enough to advance unless they only own the rights to the ones who received 50 grand. What about if I use the document disclosure program and mail myself - is it too late to do that yet?

Hello. You do not lose ownership of the patent. You lose the right to sell it without ABC having the first right of refusal which to some, seems like loss of ownership. For us it only happened to the top 12. We were in the top 24 and it did not affect us. 3 Months after the final show, they released everyone anyway.

Thanks that makes me feel better about the situation!

Has anyone seen the solar powered air conditioner for your car being sold on TV right after the kid got turned down last season? Its seems like someone took his idea, huh?

First of all, that product was NOT an air conditioner, it was a fan. Secondly, it was probably something that already existed and some smart entrepreneur thought to capitalize on the exposure the kid's unit got on AI. I wonder if it made any money?

You go at your own risk to a show like AI. If you have a provisional patent application, that is good. You will still need to have a regular patent application filed within 12 months to benefit from the provisional. Also, your provisional must encompass any changes that are made to your product during the show, otherwise it is worthless. You ever heard of opening a can of worms? For anyone who does not win the 1 million, I just can't think of a valid reason for going on the show.

I think the show will be good for me since I have no money. Its just going to be hard sleeping in my car for 5 days when I advance since i dont have money for an expensive walt disney room. If they put me on TV is there atleast a dressing room with a shower so I will not look all dirty from camping out for 5 days?

Roadshow,

I totally agree with you about the million dollars. When we made it to the top 50 a whole new contract was sent to all of us. It was scary to see that we could potentially lose the rights to sell our product on our own, but we went for it anyway. Our lawyer told us basically, we wanted to go for the $1Million or hope to finish outside of the top 12. I asked him why and he said it would probably be the most amount of product exposure with the least amount of attachment to ABC. Made sense to me and we did finish between 12 and 24 although we didn' get the airtime we wanted.
It is a risk, but was worth it for us.
