Non-disclosure statement question

I don't have a patent yet, so how do I make sure no one steals my ideas, if I approach a company and ask them if they are interested - is non-disclosure statement enough?

An NDA is the best way to protect your invention, but searching it first is recommended.

Thanks Alan, but what do you mean by "searching it"?
Also, there is a web sight that allows me to register an invention as my idea - is that something I want to do b4 having it looked into by a company, together with a NDA?
