Once again Oprah is having a show where the winning Inventor gets a promo spot on QVC. That’s great. I love anything that gets Inventors more recognition for their work.
There are a couple of things I would point out for anyone who is going to try out for that show.
First realize who your target audience is. The winner will be selected by the votes from the studio audience. That audience is primarily 99% women. So, demonstrating the fastest, lightest hydraulic pump known to the universe will get you nothing but a yawn from the studio voting audience.
I try and watch anything involving inventing and saw last years’ show. They had a number of interesting inventions demonstrated and anyone of them could have won, but I knew the winner as soon as he came out on stage.
This guy could have had a roll of toilet paper on a stick and won the studio audience over because of his marketing savvy. The guy had a stuffed horse with a saddle on it that fit over your knee when you sat down. The purpose of the invention was to give your child a ride on your knee, but giving them a horse to ride. It had a catchy name “The Poknee"
You can see it at

The thing that won the contest for him was he brought in a small child in a cowboy custom. As soon as he walked in the crowd of women let out a simultaneous AWWWWWWWW. I looked at my wife and said "He's Won" I didn't even have to see what he was demonstrating I knew he had won. The votes were tallied and he won… big surprise. He knew his audience and marketed his demonstration to it. If he had brought that invention out without the kid I doubt he would have won.
It's like when you watch America's Funniest Video's. If one of the final three videos has a kid or animal in it they will win.
So, if you have any idea that appeals to women and can somehow work a child into your demo you have the makings of a winner.
