Once again Oprah is having a show where the winning Inventor gets a promo spot on QVC. That’s great. I love anything that gets Inventors more recognition for their work.
There are a couple of things I would point out for anyone who is going to try out for that show.
First realize who your target audience is. The winner will be selected by the votes from the studio audience. That audience is primarily 99% women. So, demonstrating the fastest, lightest hydraulic pump known to the universe will get you nothing but a yawn from the studio voting audience.
I try and watch anything involving inventing and saw last years’ show. They had a number of interesting inventions demonstrated and anyone of them could have won, but I knew the winner as soon as he came out on stage.
This guy could have had a roll of toilet paper on a stick and won the studio audience over because of his marketing savvy. The guy had a stuffed horse with a saddle on it that fit over your knee when you sat down. The purpose of the invention was to give your child a ride on your knee, but giving them a horse to ride. It had a catchy name “The Poknee"
You can see it at www.PoKnee.com.
The thing that won the contest for him was he brought in a small child in a cowboy custom. As soon as he walked in the crowd of women let out a simultaneous AWWWWWWWW. I looked at my wife and said "He's Won" I didn't even have to see what he was demonstrating I knew he had won. The votes were tallied and he won… big surprise. He knew his audience and marketed his demonstration to it. If he had brought that invention out without the kid I doubt he would have won.
It's like when you watch America's Funniest Video's. If one of the final three videos has a kid or animal in it they will win.
So, if you have any idea that appeals to women and can somehow work a child into your demo you have the makings of a winner.

I was going to audition in LA but they changed the auditioning dates.

Plus I am not willing to give up one of my prototypes to QVC.

I also would have liked to audition for the Everyday Edisons auditions in Las Vegas, but it just so happens that all 3 auditions are around the same time.

I guess that's a good thing if you have the time & money.

Oh that's right I'm an Inventor - Who's got the time? & What money?

It would have been nice to go to all (3) Auditions.

Is it just me or do you think that it's a little funny that everything happens all at once.

Which path in the road does one take?

I guess that would depend upon what type of Invention one has?

Put all your eggs in one basket and go for the American Inventor Show.

You have to remember this is for T.V. The reason you see all of them having auditions at the same time is that they are all on the same schedule as far as getting material in the can. They can't stay on the road to long because they have to be back in time for the regular season shows and materials.
A friend of mine will be in the second installment of Everyday Edisons. He is still doing taping for that show and has to go to their studio for update tapings since they are showing the actual process the Inventor is going through.
I am looking forward to seeing Everyday Edisons it sounds like it will be more reralistic and informative than American Inventor. Very seldom did they ever give out any advice the viewing public could have used.

I did the LA Oprah/QVC audition. 1,000+ were seen, lots of inventors. There was a higher percentage of female auditioners. I was given word right at the table that the invention was good, but that they were not looking for toys. The demographics don't support it, plus the toy was not "demonstrable" enough. In other words, it isn't a stomp rocket that flies from room to room. Oh well, nice try anyway.

I love your toy! Who have you shown it too? I would think a toy company would jump on this quickly.
