It seems like you're clever enough to know that IP concerns can play a big part in this. What you can do for yourself is go ahead an DO a patent search to the best of your ability. HIt the databases, and find what you are looking for. There will almost definitely be something similar out there, at least.
Beyond that, it sounds like you would benefit by talking someone you trust about the specifics of your project. Most of the general info on invention doesn't address the specifics of individual projects, with respect to mfg considerations, marketing, and so on.
I will contact you by email, and you are welcome to share specifics with me if you like. I can do my best to point you in the right direction, if I can't help you myself.
