There is a big difference between good intentions and a good product. I think the ball ideas are very good and I don't see it as owners being lazy. My dog goes into depression when we leave in the morning. We see him at lunch time and then a few hours later, but during that time he just lies there depressed. I'd love to get one of these and do surveillance with a motion camera.
