Will car drive itself someday?

Maybe it's closer than you think.
University of Michigan has a project called "Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety System"
The project director at the University of Michigan says the
equipment could help car and truck drivers choose the path of least
danger, when either stopping or changing lanes would pose risks.
The Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety System is supposed to go
beyond the collision warning detectors seen in some luxury models.
It would take data from multiple sources to help drivers assess
their options.

G'day everyone, this is my first post.
The challenge facing folk developing self-driving cars is increasingly not a technological one, the DARPA Grand Challenge is proof of that. The biggest obstacle from here is going to be legislative. Who is responsible in a crash involving a self-driving car? Is it the person supervising the car, the person who programmed the car, or is it considered impossible for the self-driving car to be at fault? Law makers and developers are going need to work this out before proper self driving cars (the kind we all want, that actually do drive for you) are going to be allowed on public roads.
Restrictions, segregated lanes might be one "safe" solution.
Flashing lights and warning signs may be another.
Lets hope legislators can come up with something better.
