Most Amazing Inventions?

The engineers at CR4 are having a very active discussion.
Their topic is:
Think for a moment of inventions we trust our very lives with. My top choice is a vehicle tire! We speed down the road daily on nothing more than air pressure! The tire is held on the wheel by a small strip of rubber in contact with the wheel called the bead. When you think of how small the surface area of the tire is in contact with the wheel, it is something amazing! Can you list another invention that we trust so much with our lives?
I thought folks may want to check it out to see what engineers think are all time great inventions, and perhaps share some you think are all time greats here.

At the end of a year they always have one of those top 100 count downs on the radio.
In 1999 at the end of the year they had a top 100 count down on Inventions for the past 100 years on the radio.
The radio program said that the number (1) most important Invention for the last 100 years was TP-Toilet Paper.
In 1900 TP-Toilet Paper was just being Invented & still had real wood fibers which one could get splinters from.
They also said that (1) of the advertising commercials were - Look Fewer Less Splinters.
Next to TP-Toilet Paper they say Running Water is the most important Invention, including the Invention of the Toilet.
Personally I think the number (1) most important Invention would be Electricty, we would all still be in the dark without it.
Without Electricty we would all be back in the stone age.
No Cars, Motors of any kind, Radio, TV, Computers, Phones, Microwaves, Appliances, Batteries & most importantly Lights.

Hah, toilet paper. I think that is sooo true. I am going to ask Mike Daisy, our invention history writer, to write about the history of toilet paper as it would make for interesting reading in the...toilet.

Yes, electricity.
I think of all things, it depends on what time frame.
If you start early, its the rock tool.
If its recent, its the internet.
if its during our lifetime, I agree with electricity...but how about hygiene and antibiotics...and liquor.

At the risk of sounding like a "know-it-all", I would disagree that electricity qualifies as an invention. Electricity is a naturally occurring phenomenon, and it has been observed since the beginning of man. The "discovery" of how to capture electricity from lightning, led to the further understanding of the power of electricity. The inventions that ensued that could harness this power, and generate small, controllable amounts of it, then paved the way to some of the most useful inventions in the history of mankind. Much like primeval man harnessing the power of fire for the purposes of cooking, extracting metals from ore for tool making, and for waging war, the harnessing of electricity changed man's existence permanently.
I like cement as the answer. Wasn't this invented by the Romans? Or was it the Greeks?

How about the "lie" It helps you get out of sticky situations and it can even allow you to become president if you use it enough

The 2 formulas were similar, however, the Greeks formula was first and it used an extract from the cement plant, thus the name. The Roman formula is what we use today, with many advancements and improvements. It is truly an amazing product, it’s lifespan has lasted already surpassed 3000 years.
That being said, I have to agree that it was the ability to control fire, without that we would not have any of the other inventions.
