Interesting little article on the pre-auditions for the Chicago auditions.

http://www.mariondaily.com/articles/200 ... news01.txt

"While thousands of inventors wait in line for their chance at making the cut for the second season of the ABC television series, American Inventor, six creative individuals will move to the front of the line for the Chicago try outs.

Local inventors Terry Sharp of Harrisburg, Lance J. Melvelle Bradshaw III of Carbondale, Don Falknor of Herrin, Michael Garcia of Marion and the team of Tim Homoya and Austin Nelson of Hurst won the five top spots at American Inventor Pre-Audition."

"The Pre-Audition event, which was held March 24 at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale’s Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center, attracted more than 50 participants with 25 inventors debuting their creations."

Here's another article on the pre-auditions

http://www.thesouthern.com/articles/200 ... 752038.txt

More than 25 inventors debuted their creations at the pre-audition event, Russell said. Nearly an equal number came along to make up the audience. The event began with an overview of the rules for the Chicago auditions followed by "American Inventor" style presentations by the inventors. A panel of judges scored the presentations and even the audience had the chance to make constructive comments to the hopeful inventors.

Thanks for the update. Its nice to see the top 5 get prizes.

Are the preaudition events not at the same place as the real auditions? Do only the top 6 get to see the real judges? Are the preauditions just construction criticism thats not required?

Hi everyone,

I was at the Chicago audition. My friend and I arrived at Navy Pier at 5am. We joined the other hopefulls across the street where security was making us stay. While waiting on the street corner, I was telling people about this great site. At 6am they allowed us to go to the doors of the building. Navy Pier is a very long building so it took a while to get to the doors to the ballroom. Once there we started lining up. Eventually the line stretched down the long side, around the corner and around the 2nd corner.

At 7:30am they took us in groups of about 50 to line up along the railing in front of Lake Michigan to film the long line. That's where it was cold and windy and then it started raining. Finally they started taking small groups of people into the building. I was in the 3rd group as was number 54. After getting my participant number I was assigned the "B" room.

I didn't have to wait long to go into the cubicle room to do my thing. As a matter of fact I didn't even have time to read the papers they gave us after assigning the room. There were a man and a woman at the table as well as the cameraman. I had two inventions. The woman really like them but said they "aren't what we are looking for for the show". Oh well, I tried. She asked if I belong to any inventor groups because she thinks I would benefit with my ideas. She wrote down the website and that was it.

After 5 hours in line and 5 minutes in the room, my American Inventor dreams were over, at least for this season. While I was in doing my "interivew" my friend saw the guy that was behind us in line and he said one of his two inventions was selected for the next round. He had told us that he already had two companies shopping two inventions for him at the cost of $13,000 and $9,000 (so far all he got was a hat from one of them.) He showed us pictures of both prototypes and explained how they work while we were in line so it will be interesting to see if he makes it to the show. He had to wait around until today (Monday) when George Foreman will be there for the next round.

So that's my Chicago story.

While in line I was amazed at how open people were about showing and explaining the details of their inventions!

Thanks Scrapbook Di for telling folks about our site and also for sharing your invention story.

It's cool for all of us who could not go to hear the stories and also check in on how folks are doing.

I am expecting to get some photos from the Chicago event and I will put those up if I get them on the front page.

I went to the Chicago audition with my husband. He had his and I had mine. Needless to say they didn't go for either but my husband made it to the second round. We must have been right behind scrapbookdi because we were close to the front of the line right behind Erick Thompson's girls. He was there and he was handing out advice to all. Very nice man! He let us get a picture of him and my son. He gave me Pep talks when I told him mine was rejected. That was more exciting then being interviewed. He gave me more ideas and more encouragement then American Inventor staff could even want to think of. One thing I liked was that he discouraged people to take their invention to "Invent-Tech" and other places like that that you pay them, for nothing really. Thank you Eric, and I will open my restaurant with in the next week. As far as my invention goes I will not give up on it. A prototype is very important to have. I think that is why I didn't advance. I cook, I am not an engineer. There are places to have one made and they say you don't have to have a patent and they will sign a confidentiality form. I don't know how much they would charge, but I am thinking a pretty penny. As far as the audition goes...well my advice to all is... be yourself, have a working prototype, be honest about anything they ask, and bring some one with you so you can go to the bathroom with out loosing your spot in line. Good Luck!! Regeina
