Scrup, I couldn't agree with you more. Also, does it make sense to start spending money before you do a search yourself? Granted you may not know exactly how to navigate the patent office website when you forst get there, but it is worth the effort to learn. It is free. There are so many options available you can try before spending a dime.

Yeah, like I always say, if you've got access to the internet, the a quick patent search should be step 1.
A good inventor/responsible engineer will prolly have the start page of his/her favorite patent search engine, marked as a favorite on their web browser.
