I think somewhere up front it should say "read these FAQ to help phrase your question better". I always saw a FAQ as a "don't ask a simular question twice" on other forums. I don't think that is the culture here and we may want to impart that up front before we kill any new posts by new people. How many new threads have been started since the FAQ that are not part of that section?
Another byproduct is I always felt that I had to read everypost ever written before I could post a question. I am too lazy to do this. Do we want to send this message? Or do others not get the same message?

It is obvious that a FAQ section would cut down on redundant posts by newbies, but I don't agree that that would be a good thing.
Let's assume that we put up the best FAQ section anyone ever could for the newbie. What would compel that person to participate in the forums? I dislike answering the same questions over and over, but at least it is the personal touch this brings that would be lost with an "effective" FAQ section.

For example, like Work2XL suggested in one of the question topics, post temporary responses. That way we can carry-on a discussion, but then 'clean-up' after ourselves, by deleting our own posts within say 3 days. Then, the value of the forum is maintained, and people can socialize.
How would that be?
(If it's too much to ask, then how difficult would it be to just start an interesting discussion in a different category?)

I agree the section may die out. It has to do with the lack of discussion, don't you think? Are they the only questions? Can the answers really be that easy?
