You can tell a company enough about your idea without revealing the workings of that idea. Lets say you approach a company that makes kites. You can say that you have developed a kite that will launch itself and will fly in any wind conditions.
You have not told how you accomplish this task, but have given them enough info that they should be able to decide if their interest is peaked.
