Da Vinci in my opinion was a great graphic artist!

Artists invent something new all the time...they create and invent...yep, they should get more credit!

No one can deny he was a man of science. That makes a big difference.

Artists, writers, musicians, dancers are generally not called inventors even though they are creative and do produce a product. Why is this?

I think if you’re the first to create something, prove it does what it claims through a proto-type instead of a drawing and can prove you are the originator of it; then you are the inventor of that idea.
My 2 cents... :D

There are many way to define an inventor.

Arthur Clark (author of 2001) is often referred to as the inventor of the communications satellite.
I believe he only talked and wrote about it.

To me an inventor thinks a works through the idea. Plans, notes, computer code, or some type of work to
record the idea is required.

The inventor must have that 1st model. Bread board prototypes are the stuff of inventors. As a kid I saw a movie
about the invention of the transistor. The 1st lab model was big, ugly, and worked well enough to keep the
scientists on the project.

Best of all the successful inventor makes money, and other people benefit from his new idea.

Michelle - I like your last statement about starting a microloan site for inventors needing money. I would certainly do that if I became a millionaire with my invention. But, how would that work and what criteria would be needed? Just thinking here ...

I've been in this invention racket for thirty years now and the best inventions are the simplest ones. They are the ones where you say "why didn't I think of that?" If you make any money is not the point but rather that you provided something new that can be used weather it is sucessfull or not. That is the inventor. 8)
