100 miles to the gallon car

I believe 100 miles to the gallon is possible.
Think about a few facts.
The internal combustion engine has increased in efficiency only fractionally.
When you look at cubic feet per minute of air fuel mixture the results are disappointing.
One third of the energy produced in the power stroke is lost to the compression stroke.
Another third is lost in the exhaust stroke.
Therefore only one third of the energy produced in the power stroke is directed to the wheels to move the car.
100 miles to the gallon (or better) is not in the internal combustion piston engine.
With unlimited resources at you disposal how would you approach this problem?
What type of prototype would you build?
I'm not interested in the government or GM doing this.
Picture yourself with a super laboratory and CNC machine shop.
What would you have your staff build?

I would start by capturing the exhaust energy to pre-heat the fuel...oops, have I said too much?

I would start by finding out how to extract as much useable energy out of the fuel,and then find out the most efficient means of converting that energy into mechanical energy and then the most efficient way for that mechanical system to do useful
work within the context of vehicle propulsion,control,energy capture,bearing in mind wind resistance,friction and mass.Then I would find the best ergonomic/load displacement for carrying people.And then write on the vehicle'this is transport,not a social statement'.Socialisation of consumer goods is false coin.Anti-rant switch'ON'.

Dear Scrupulous,
Would you be preheating the exhaust for a piston engine or something different?
I believe the new volkswagon beetle uses the fuel to cool the engine.
Is this similar to what you propose?

Naw Terry, I was talking about using the exhaust manifold/pipe assembly as a heat exhanger, to do work. One of the things it could do is bring the fuel up to a temp just below it's flashpoint under pressure...

Well, Electric Cars have been the future for decades now...
I think Terry possibly realizes that there is shall we say a "push" to keep on burning oil.

The auto manufactures have had the technology since the 1940’s to get 100 miles per gallon.
The auto manufactures also know how to make cars that are maintenance free for 100 thousand miles.
America use to make things to last - AMERICAN MADE
Ask a mechanic the question of FUEL vs. AIR Ratio?
I can’t say any more in the open forum.

Arguable point . If you pay attention to the last five years on electric cars you will see activity like no other time.
Tesla, Volt, Japanese models, prius, regenerative braking... Yes oil is still burning but not as bright as it once did

I don't believe this is true. The laws of physics apply to all of us. Usually more than one person finds the same solution to the same problem at about the same time. For example the telephone, television, and revolver.
Science can be duplicated. If 100 miles per gallon had been done 60 years ago. Someone else would have duplicated it.

Tesla Motors needs and deserves a $450 million dollar loan to tool up for their family sedan.
Project Better Place has a super cool concept. Batteries exchanged in a car wash style machine.
The Chevy Volt will beat them all to the market.
The electric car was perfected 100 years ago. The problem is the battery, heavy, inefficient, and not green.
I believe these problems will be solved.
