There is a new documentary DVD out called Objectified, by director Gary Hustwit.

It is a fantastic look at product design, and I would recommend it to anyone. It gets into the practical nature of design for commercialization, as well as ergonomics and CAD. It doesn't go too deep into engineering...but, that's what shows like "How It's Made" are good for.

You can rent the video on Netflix. And, if you have access to the Netflix viewer, then you can get a quick taste of the documentary by watching a "playable" video called Helvetica from the same director. Another good Netflix playable is Welcome to Macintosh, which gets into product life cycle and engineering at Apple.
