So I'm totally new when it comes to patents. So hopefully this makes sense and if I'm getting anything wrong, please let me know.

I've got an idea for an invention. It's a device that does something that isn't in use. I've got the way the device should look and what parts are contain within the device. Both the device and the reasoning for the device aren't in use (if the reasoning matters).

Now would the actual device be a design patent and the reasoning/action be categorized as a utility patent? If I'm understanding this correctly?

More to come...
