Members of the forums thought it would be a good idea to have frequent questions that inventors had answered here.

If you have a question that should be on our Inventor FAQs, please post them here.

If appropriate, we will put the question up to a vote.

Those voted into the FAQ will be posted as FAQs here.

People answering must stick to the specific question and not discuss anything else. This is not a discussion but answers to the FAQ.

Thanks.

Now, what should the FAQS be?

Scrupulous has graciously volunteered to be the manager/moderator of this FAQ forum so thank you Scrup!

I will start with proposing the first question.

I think we should have an FAQ

FAQ: I have an invention idea. What should I do? How do I get started?

These are some of the FAQ I get sent to me in emails.

FAQ:

1. Do I need to patent my idea before submitting it to a company?

2. What is a market analysis? Where do you get one?

3. What are typical royalty rates for an idea that is licensed?

4. How long does a typical patent take?

5. What is a provisioanl patent?

6. What is a nondisclosure?

7. How do you contact a company?

8. Should I wait until my patent is granted before showing my idea to a company?

I will submit more once I get through reviewing my emails for FAQ's.

I have gotten 9 products licensed spending less than $100 on each, you can too.

1. Will my idea/invention make money?

2. Do I license my idea or start a business?

3. I think I've been scammed by an invention marketing firm. What can I do?

4. What is prior art, and how do I do a search for it?

5. Where can I look up patents?

6. What is intellectual property, and how is it protected?

(this is going to take some time folks!!)

This is my next grouping. These are standard questions I get asked in emails all the time. I am not including the really bizzare ones. I am sure Road Show gets some interesting ones also.

9. What is an advance and how does that work? Do all companies pay an advance?

10. Do I need a prototype made before submitting my idea to a company?

11. How do I know if my idea is marketable?

12. If I get a patent granted does that mean my idea is marketable?

13. How long does it take for a company to review my submission?

14. Do I need a lawyer to submit my idea to a company?

15. How long does it take a product to get on the market after a company licenses it from me?

16. Is my royalty based on the wholesale or retail price of the product?

Heck, let's just go ahead and start posting these, each as their own topic in this forum.

I'll start putting together an announcement for this forum, to cover the ground rules. For now, let's limit this to one response per member, and roughly 100 words or less. You can include links when appropriate, but the idea is to get the answers here. Images would be fantastic, and should be no wider than 800 pixels.

Also, please use the following format with the topic question:

FAQ: I have an idea, now what?

(i.e. "FAQ:" in bold, and the question in italics. You may add clarification in the body of the original post, but that would not be preferable unless it was necessary.)

1) How do I make a cheap prototype?
2) How do I find a manufacturer?
3) Where can I find an investor?

Off the top of my head...

Is copyright protection a viable alternative to patent protection?

My invention simply involves combining two exisiting products. Can I still receive a patent?

What is a provisional patent?

How do I obtain trademark rights?

What constitutes trademark infringement?
