This forum is dedicated to compiling the most frequently asked questions regarding the invention process. As many already know, that process often concerns itself with intellectual property, manufacturing, marketing, prototyping, common sense, financing, business psychology, scams, graphic design, tooling and materials, product development, networking, and so on.

Anyone is free to post a topic question, as long as it differs from those that have already been listed. The topic questions will appear in the order of most recent posting activity. Once a topic question reaches 1000 views, it will become a "sticky" question, and will remain near the top of the growing list. (The member who posts a particular question may already have an answer to give.)

This is a "wiki" of sorts. Advice and opinions are encouraged from all walks. Let the readers decide what information suits them. As every inventor's situation is unique, and as the mass of relevant issues is dynamic, no distinction will be made here between fact and opinion, necessarily. It's understood that whatever gets written here is written conscientiously.

------------------------------------

With that in mind, please adhere to the following guidelines to the best of your ability:

1. Only one response per member, per topic question. (You can edit your response on a continual basis.)

2. Answer the topic question directly. Please do not turn a topic question into a discussion.

3. Limit your response to 200 words. (Use the word processor word-count method.)

4. Don't use the original post to answer the question. Use it when needed, to clarify or qualify the question.

5. Images and URL text should be no wider than 600 pixels (to keep threads from running off the screen).

---------------------------------

Please use the following format for topic questions (using normal-sized text)...

FAQ: How do I keep my idea from getting shanghai-ed?

Including "FAQ" will aid keyword searching.

------------------------------

Your participation with this is appreciated in advance. :)

pixel width changed from 800 to 600

What do we do if an answer is vague or we don't understand it or it needs to be expanded without turning it into a discussion?

Just start a new topic question.

It may seem counter-intuitive at first, but the whole idea is to get direct answers to a single question from a number of sources.

Putting follow-up questions at the top level allows people to go directly to them, if needed, without having to search. Ideally, a particular question may be the next follow-up question for a number of other topics. That's why they all belong [at the same level] on the forum list.
