FAQ: Do I need to patent my idea before submitting it?

So then I would call them up and ask if they look at outside ideas. If they did I would send them an NDA before I told them anything about my invention? If I fill out the product submission form on their website, and they like the idea, could I still ask them to sign an NDA? How do I get them to sign an NDA before they know anything about my invention?

You do not need to patent a idea before submitting it to a company. You do need to have a nondisclosure signed by both parties prior to submitting any material to a company for review.
A patent does not mean your idea is marketable, only that it was patentable.
You do need to verify if the company you are wanting to submit your idea to looks at outside ideas from Inventors in a unpatented form.

If the company has an online submission form. I don't fill out the form. I contact the company directly and ask for a NDA. If they refuse I look for another company to send my idea.
